Over the last couple of years, we have seen an increase in gang violence in the UK. Over

100 people have been lost their lives to knife crime in the capital alone.

Recently there has been discussions in the house of parliament about banning Grime and Drill music from the Uk music scene. The government and the metropolitan police believe that Grime music is the cause for the increase in knife crime and gang violence in the UK.

Grime music has been in the UK Scene for over 10 years. It has recently seen an increase in international awareness as big stars like Drake have taken a liking to the UK music Scene.

Recently there has been a new form of UK music called Drill music. Drill music is underground rap music, which hears artist talk about the lives that they live in gangs.

Drill music originated in Chicago, inspired by US rapper Chief Keef. It has taken over the UK music scene by a storm.

The gritty, hard core lyrics about gang life in the Uk, has seen the metropolitan police use Drill music videos to crack down on certain gang leaders.

Some Drill and Grime artist have been banned from making music by the police.

This is part of the new scheme made by the metropolitan police and supported by the crown court association to help stop rappers from promoting and glorifying gang violence

Detective superintendent Mike West told the independent that ‘the number of videos that “incite violence” have been increasing since 2015.

Grime artists such as Stormzy and Krept and Konan, have argued that banning Uk rappers from making music about their life is not going to help stop knife crime in the UK.

They have also said that the government are looking for someone to blame for the increase in gang violence in the Uk, instead of addressing the real reason for gang violence.

A lot of Grime artists have been banned from performing in certain venues across the UK by venue owners and the police.  As it’s believed that there is a lot of violence during their shows.

Many clubs still play Grime and Drill music at events.

The phoenix today had a conversation with a club promoter called Jason fox in Coventry to discuss why clubs still play grime and drill music if it’s believed to be the reason behind gang violence.

Jason Foxx said “we don’t associate the music with violence in the club, it is a popular music genre is has blown massively over the last 10 years.  Grime and Drill music is dominating the charts.

We as a club have a no violence policy. We search everyone that enters the doors and do our best to prevent violence.

We don’t believe that grime music is the cause of violence in the UK.”

Grime and drill music are one of the biggest genres in the UK. The debate on whether grime and drill music should be banned from the UK music scene has been a one going one.Do you agree with the Government that Grime and Drill music is the reason for an increase in violence in the UK?
